Application Instructions
Preparation:
Make sure your decking is clean and free of dirt, oil, grease, wax and silicone. Scrub off any algae, moss or mildew and leave your decking to thoroughly dry.
How to prepare decking for staining:
Untreated, weathered decking:
Apply decking restorer to highlight your deck’s natural colour and provide a sound base for application to ensure the stain penetrates effectively.
Follow the instructions on the tin to apply your restorer.
Leave your deck to thoroughly dry out before applying the stain
Previously finished decking:
Use sandpaper to remove areas of loose, flaking or peeling coatings.
Strip all old finishes to ensure your new finish isn’t patchy.
Check the cut ends of your decking and use protector to make sure no moisture seeps in and ruins your decking.
New wood:
New wood should be left for roughly six months to weather naturally. This helps to erode pre-treatment so your stain can thoroughly penetrate the deck. Once you’ve left it six months, you need to follow these steps.
Clean the deck with a scrubbing brush and decking cleaner to open the pores of the wood and fully remove any contamination from the manufacturer of the timber.
Rinse thoroughly with water – ideally a pressure washer.
Allow the deck to completely dry
You can test the effectiveness of your cleaning by sloshing the deck with water. If it beads, keep cleaning until it no longer does that.
Application:
Your decking stain is best applied in temperatures above 10°C. Be sure to pick a day with a clear forecast and make sure your deck is thoroughly dry before you begin.
Stir the stain thoroughly before you apply it and don’t dilute it. You will need to periodically keep stirring it as you apply it.
Use a wide brush specially designed for water based finishes. Apply it liberally to make sure the deck is evenly covered.
Focus on three to four boards at a time to avoid overlap marks. Work along the grain and ensure the leading edge is distributed evenly.
Wait four hours for the first coat to dry.
Apply a second coat and leave it to dry.
And that’s it! Your decking is now protected against all weather conditions and heavy footfall – so there’s no need to worry about a summer BBQ ruining it.
Aftercare:
Repair:
You should regularly inspect your decking for signs of dirt or damage.
If you notice a spot that’s not quite up to standard, all you need to do is lightly sand it and reapply a thin coat of the stain to the problem area.
Cleaning
Cleaning:
Sweep your decking with a stiff broom to help your stain looking it’s best for longer.
Use a broom to remove debris, leaves and dirt that can work its way into the grooves of your decking.
If you notice mould or algae, clean it to prevent it getting worse.
Storage
Do not use or store in extremes of temperature and protect from frost.
