How to paint decking with Cuprinol

Decking is fantastic addition to any home. It can provide everything from extra space for dining, an outdoor exercise space or somewhere to just relax.

Despite decking being cared for due to its versatility from a space point of view, if not cared for physically, over time the decking will develop small splits and cracks from exposure to the elements.

To help prevent this and keep your deck looking its best year after year, it’s important you know how to maintain it.

Deck maintenance involves anything from moving the furniture around to ensure sufficient air reaches all areas to avoid damp and rot, to doing a deep clean and painting it to provide a protective barrier.

Today, PAINT Direct will be sharing best practice for painting your garden decking. Not only will it refresh your outdoor space, but it will also help form a protective barrier around the timber so that it can be enjoyed for many years to come.

To ensure you can continue to enjoy your decking area year after year, we’ve put together some maintenance tips, along with a guide on how to paint decking.

Picking paint for your deck

Before you can begin painting your deck, you’ve got to pick a paint that’s right for you. Yes, colour is important but there’s much more to painting your deck than the colour, which is what you’ll find with Cuprinol Anti Slip Decking Stain.

Cuprinol Anti Slip Decking Stain gives a semi-transparent, matt finish which has been specially formulated for use on all types of timber decking.

Cuprinol Decking Stain colours your decking with a tough, durable, water-repellent, protective coat that resists cracking and peeling caused by weather.

Anti Slip Decking Stain has a unique double action formulation which has invisible anti-slip microbeads to make decks safer than untreated wood and an algicide to help protect the film surface from green algae and mould growth.

Before you can begin painting...

Before you can begin painting, a little bit of maintenance is essential. This includes giving your deck a quick sweep to remove any dust, and also check for any loose boards or cracks.

As with any paint project, you must do some prep work. If you’ve applied deck paint before, use a paint scraper to remove any remaining layers. Then, sand down your decking in the direction of your deck boards. It’s worth noting, this is only effective for smooth boards and not grooved ones.

Once you’ve swept and scraped your deck, give it a good clean with some deck cleaner. Work it into the wood with a scrubbing brush and rinse with a hose, or a pressure washer on the lowest setting, allowing 24 hours for drying.

One last step for prep is to apply masking tape and plastic sheets to any area you’d like to protect, such as any masonry paint or door seals.

Applying your paint

Stir Cuprinol Anti Slip Decking Stain thoroughly before use.

Starting in the furthest away corner and working your way backwards, use a roller or paint sprayer to work quickly and then a brush to get to the fiddlier areas.

Moving in the direction of the wood grain, you should apply 2-3 coats and ensure that each coat is completely dry before applying the next.

It’s the perfect time of year to paint your deck, as you should avoid application in temperatures below 5C, in damp conditions or if rain is likely before the product has dried.

Top tip: Avoid heavy wear and tear for a few days after application to allow the paint to dry fully!

Once you’re satisfied with the result, remove the masking tape and touch up your remaining small areas and enjoy your newly improved decking area!
