An undercoat is used on a surface that has been painted or primed. It provides a seal which prepares it for the decorative or topcoat and prevents the surface from soaking up too much paint, a colour or stain bleeding or the paint peeling. Using undercoat is a good way to fill in tiny gaps and dents in the surface you’re painting. It gives a smooth and uniform base to apply the topcoat over.
