How to use Hammerite Metal Paints

Hammerite Metal Paints are specially formulated to form a tough barrier that resists knocks and scrapes, maintaining a beautiful finish for longer. From railings to radiators and gates to garden furniture, Hammerite will protect and transform your metal. View our range of paints that can be applied directly onto new, old or previously painted metal surfaces.

Hammerite Direct to Rust Metal Paint can be used for all kinds of metal, like railings, garden furniture and pots or even a balcony. Whilst many use Hammerite Metal Paint as a protective measure, it’s the perfect opportunity to give your metal items a new lease of life.

So, here’s how you can use Hammerite.

Begin by removing all loose rust and flaking paint from the metal using a wire brush.

If the metal was already painted, wash down thoroughly with diluted detergent, rinse with clean water to ensure there’s no soapy residue left.

Top tip: For the best results, lightly sand the surface to maximise the adhesion of the paint.

Before you begin painting, cover the surface below the metal object with a thick later newspaper or a dust sheet to catch any spills or drips.

To begin painting, stir the paint thoroughly and apply with a good quality brush.

Remember to use a brush that is reflective of the size of the object you’re painting. For example, use a narrow brush for painting railings, or a larger one for a bigger metal object, such as a table.

For the best finish, apply two thin coats of Hammerite Direct to Rust Metal Paint in Smooth. Remember to leave enough time between coats before applying another coat.
