Renovating your exterior cladding with Sadolin

Brace yourselves, because wetter weather is coming!

Whilst your cladding may be looking immaculate right now, there’s only so much weathering it can stand - even though its purpose is to withstand the elements. To help increase the longevity of your cladding and maintain your home’s kerb appeal, you should consider painting it.

There are plenty of paints out there to choose from, but one that has stood up to the test time and time again is Sadolin Superdec Opaque Wood Protection.

Sadolin Superdec is extremely durable giving up to 10 years of protection. It is formulated to weather naturally, to ensure that it retains flexibility to resist peeling, cracking and flaking - helping to keep your home looking its best.

Prep work

As with all projects, there’s some prep work that needs to happen before you can begin your task.

The first step is picking a colour of paint that suits your needs. Our customer went for black, but there are an incredible 298 colours to choose from, as Sadolin Superdec can be mixed to order!

Once you’ve chosen your colour and ordered from Paint Direct, you can prepare your cladding for painting.

Prepare for painting

The first step that we at Paint Direct recommend is to wash your cladding down with a hose. This should loosen and remove any peeling paint, dirt on the surface, as well as reveal any panels that are worse for wear and that need replacing, as all of these factors can have a negative impact the finish of your painting.

After the cladding has dried, the second thing we recommend doing to ensure the surface is even and smooth is to sand the classing down using a 2-300 grit sandpaper, which then requires you to rinse the cladding once more and allowing to dry.

You can then cover any areas you wish to protect from paint, for example, our customer covered the garage door with a dust sheet to avoid paint spraying during the application process.

*Please note, there may be an additional step to your prep work if your cladding has been made with a resinous timber. If it is, you’ll need to apply a blocking primer before using Sadolin Superdec, as the finish will be compromised.

Painting

As Sadolin Superdec is self-priming and undercoating for the majority of surfaces, you can get going as soon as your delivery has arrived. With Paint Direct’s vast array of delivery options, you can even get your paint by the next working day if ordered before 1pm.

However, before painting, make sure that you’ve got the perfect weather conditions. Whilst Sadolin Superdec is dry to touch within two hours of application, you must allow 16 hours drying time to apply additional coats. Three coats is what is recommended on bare, stained or painted timber, so therefore, you should allow a three day window to apply three coats.

Some helpful tips to follow when painting are:

  • Make sure the paint is stirred well before use and applied using a brush or roller.
  • If using more than one can of colour in the same area, mix the cans before use.
  • Do not apply in temperatures below 10°C or in damp conditions.
  • And to reiterate, resinous timbers require a coat of blocking primer, to prevent discolouration.

And that’s it!

You’ve got all of the help you need to paint your cladding, and there’s a bonus too!
