Useful tips on how to paint your hallway and stairs

• Due to the height of stairwells, it’s important to make safety a number one priority. Not only can it be difficult to reach the tallest part, they can sometimes also be an awkward shape, so you will need to ensure your ladder is tall enough and your tools are sound enough to stay safe as you paint those hard to reach places!
• Extension poles can be added to a paint brush or roller to give you extra height if required. Telescopic extension poles are particularly useful as you can adjust the length according to the height of the wall or ceiling you are painting.
• Prepare the walls – fill any holes and cracks.
• Always remember to start at the top and work down so drips and splashes don’t affect completed work. Therefore it’s advisable to begin by painting the ceiling and coving.
• Then move on to emulsion the walls, stopping when you reach any picture or dado rails and painting those first, before you continue painting the walls below.
• Finally, paint the stair stringers, spindles/banister, handrail and skirting boards to give the finishing touch and if you paint your risers and spindles white to match the trim in the house, they really will stand out.
