Paint your shed with Cuprinol!

Garden sheds are a staple of any busy home. It provides additional storage for bikes, tools and more - as well as a little hideaway when you need a quick break from the hustle and bustle of a busy household.

We have the perfect task to get you out of the house and fully occupied with a task that requires as much, or as little help as you like and the best thing is, it’s really easy. (you can make it seem hard by putting your hand on your hip, tilting your head and sighing every so often - we’ll indicate when below!)

The task is the opportunity to give your shed a quick lick of paint to refresh it and keep it protected from the elements. With a great range of paint colours to choose from Cuprinol’s Garden Shades, it’s easy to make your garden shed the place to be in your garden.

Painting your shed will not only breathe some life into it, it will also act as a barrier to protect it against the elements, like UV rays which can cause wood look a little sad by greying over time, as well as acting as a barrier against rain which can cause the panels of sheds to crack and split.

To take away the hard work, read these helpful painting tips to have your shed spruced up, weather resistant and ready for the seasons ahead in literally no time at all…

Cuprinol Spray & Brush 2 in 1 Pump Sprayer

Getting started

The tools you need to use to paint your shed will depend on how much peace you want.

Painting by hand using paint brush or a long pile roller will give you the most peace - or if you’re in more of a hurry, you can try to use a sprayer. If you decide to use a sprayer, make sure you use a Cuprinol sprayer as Cuprinol Garden Shades has been formulated to work with Cuprinol sprayers specifically.

Preparing your shed

Like all paint tasks, you must do some prep work. Begin by checking your sheds’ structural integrity, which is especially important if you’re painting an older shed.

Once it’s structurally sound, wipe it clean using a firm bristle brush to get rid of any cobwebs and debris. If it’s an older shed, you’ll need to wash it down with a fungicidal wash to ensure you’ve gotten rid of any moss, algae or fungi that has built up over the years. Now would be a good time to pop your hand on your hip, tilt your head and sigh.

Once you’ve done this, you should be able to see any gaps and imperfections in your shed, so now you can get to remedying those. This is quite easy to do using caulk or wood filler!

If you opt for a silicon-based caulk, or something similar, you’ll need to allow for a day after application for it to dry.

Painting your shed

After the prep work, you can apply the first coat of paint. September is an excellent time of year to do this because you must do this in dry conditions, above 5°C.

Using your paintbrush, roller, or sprayer, apply  the paint with the grain of the wood. Slowly work your way around the shed until every wall is covered, then wait for the first coat of paint to dry completely. Again, this is the perfect opportunity to pop your hand on your hip, tilt your head and sigh.

Then, the shed will be ready for the second coat of paint. Paint it in the same way as the first coat, ensuring the paint is distributed evenly.

You should apply a minimum of two coats of Cuprinol Garden Shades and allow 8 hours between coats drying time. It’s worth noting, Cuprinol Garden Shades will be touch dry in 1 hour under normal weather conditions.
