Paint Direct's guide to painting over water stains

Whether your house is older, or a new build, you cannot escape the perils of a water stain.

Caused by anything from a leaky roof, to leaking pipes between floors, water stains on can appear in an instant, leaving a perfect paint job looking imperfect.

Here’s how you can paint over the stain after you’ve fixed the problem!

Addressing the stain

Before you can paint over the stain, finding the source of the stain is imperative because if it’s not resolved, the stain will keep coming back regardless of how many times you paint over it, which also leaves opportunity for any damage caused by the leak to get worse.

Now that you've remedied the source, you can begin the project by preparing the area and surface you wish to paint.

After finding and remedying the source of the stain, you need to clean the area of the stain because water stains have the propensity to cause mould.

Preventative measures

As PAINT Direct sells more than just paint, we have the perfect product to help with this. Polycell’s 3-in-1 Mould Killer Spray contains a powerful fungicide which kills and removes mould. It totally prevents re-growth in one single application.

Simply spray on Polycell 3 in 1 Mould Killer, leave for 5 – 10 minutes and then wipe away with a damp cloth, leaving the area to air dry.

Applying primer to the stain

After cleaning and spraying with Polycell 3 in 1 Mould Killer, and allowing the clean area to dry, you can and should apply your primer.

A classic go-to at this time of year is the Zinsser B-I-N Primer. It is the ultimate shellac-based emulsion, which is a primer, sealer and stain killer - perfect for those places both inside and outside.

Zinsser B-I-N can block stubborn stains such as water stains, as well as seal porous surfaces which will come in handy if the area you’re painting is prone to water stains. Alongside this, it permanently blocks out all kinds of odours, it’s fast drying whilst being both non-toxic and hypo-allergenic - suitable for any busy household.

Taking just 45 minutes to dry between coats, you’ll be applying your chosen paint colour in no time at all.

Applying your paint

You’ve waited patiently for your primer to dry - and now it’s time to paint over those stains.

There are a few paints we recommend that will be up to the task of covering a stain.

Up first is Earthborn and their incredible Claypaint! Boasting a luxurious, ultra-matt finish for interior walls and ceilings, the way that Earthborn Claypaint is made results in a  highly breathable flat matt paint that minimises condensation and deters mildew - perfect for those tricker areas we’re trying to cover.

We can also recommend Crown Trade Clean Extreme Mould Inhibiting Scrubbable Matt.

Whilst you would have fixed the problem before painting over it, it’s always handy to prevent mould should there be another leak. Crown Trade Clean Extreme Mould Inhibiting Scrubbable Matt offers more than just a catchy name - it offers stain resistance and defends against mould with extreme fungicidal barrier defence.

Last, but not least, we would also recommend Zoffany Elite Emulsion.

Zoffany Elite Emulsion is a stain resistant and washable emulsion paint especially designed for modern living. This powerful Zoffany Elite Emulsion has been specially developed for maximum performance - perfect for this project!

And just like that, you’ve covered your unsightly stain!
