What is a wood protector?
A wood protector (sometimes named as wood preservative) is a treatment for wood that is used underneath finishes to protect the raw timber from environmental damage, deterioration, decay and lengthen the life and usage of the wood.
Wood protectors, just like most paints can be either solvent-based or water-based, both have their strengths and weaknesses depending on the project. Both contain all the important protecting ingredients although a solvent-based protector is more likely to have better penetration into the wood and is more water repellent whilst a water-based protector can be easier to work with and is environmentally friendly.
Preservers and protectors are usually clear; only darkening the woods natural colour a little, however some come in different colours, dying the wood as it ptotects it.
