How to decorate your west facing home for the summer

When it comes to painting the interior of your home, the direction it faces can play a crucial role in the overall ambiance and mood. In addition to this, living in a west-facing home brings both advantages and challenges when it comes to maintaining comfortable temperatures throughout the year.

Writing this blog from a west-facing home as the late spring sun heats up the front of my home in the afternoon, I couldn’t help but think of all of the colours that could help to keep your home nice and cool during the summer months whilst offering warmth during winter when the sun’s rays don’t pack the same punch.

Read on to explore the ideal paint tones to help keep your west-facing home cool in summer and warm in winter, ensuring a pleasant living environment all year round.

Embracing Coolness with Light Blues and Greens

Greens are very popular this year!

To counteract the heat of summer, opt for light, cool-toned colours such as pale blues and soft greens. These shades have a refreshing and calming effect, creating a visually cool atmosphere. Consider painting walls, ceilings, and larger surfaces in these colours to help reflect sunlight and reduce the heat absorption in your home.

Light blues and greens also provide a sense of serenity and evoke a connection to nature, making your space feel tranquil and soothing, especially if the added heat is making you feel a little hot under the collar.

Recommended shades:

Farrow and Ball Estate Emulsion - Teresa’s Green and Borrowed Light.

Zoffany Elite Emulsion: Quarter La Seine and Half La Seine

Dulux Matt Emulsion: Blueberry White and Mineral Mist

Reflecting Heat with Light Neutrals

Light neutral colours, such as soft greys, beiges, and off-whites, can play a significant role in maintaining a cool interior during the hot summer months.

These shades are great at reflecting, meaning they bounce back more sunlight than they absorb. By choosing light neutrals for your walls and furniture, you can minimise the amount of heat retained, helping to keep your home cooler.

These colours also provide a versatile backdrop that allows for various accent colours and decor choices. Whilst greys are considered a little passè these days, don’t listen to the nay-sayers. Grey is timeless, classic, classy and incredibly easy to make your own.

Recommended Shades:

Farrow and Ball Estate Emulsion - Wimborne White and Ammonite

Crown Crafted Luxurious Flat Matt Emulsion - Needles & Pins

It’s not really realistic to change your entire colour scheme twice per year, so if you’re doing your big home renovation now, it’s wise to think ahead of the colder season and include colours that’ll bring warmth when you need it and still keep your home cool for the summer.

Crown Crafted Luxurious Flat Matt Emulsion: New Chapter and Collectors White

Berger Matt Emulsion: Sugar Spoon and Chalk Hill

Earthborn Lifestyle Emulsion: Mittens

Harnessing Warmth with Earthy Tones

When it does come time for the winter, you may want to create a cosy and warm atmosphere, earthy tones can be your allies. Consider using warm colours like terracotta, rich browns, and deep oranges. These hues create a sense of warmth and can visually offset the cooler exterior environment.

Incorporating earthy tones through accent walls, textiles, and decor elements such as skirting boards, doorframes and wooden trims can help evoke a cosy ambiance that will embrace the winter season when it comes.

Recommended Shades:

One of the brands that does earthy tones very well is Earthborn. Fan favourites are Baked Tile and Flower Pot. Take a look!

Infusing Warmth with Deep Reds and Yellows

Often when you visit countries that are typically hotter than the UK, you’ll notice warmer and deeper colours.

To maximise the feeling of being in the med all year round and adding warmth to your west-facing home during winter, consider incorporating deep reds and yellows as accent colours.

These rich and vibrant shades add a sense of energy and cosiness to your space. Use them strategically in areas where you want to create focal points or evoke a feeling of warmth, such as living rooms or dining areas. Deep reds and yellows can bring a touch of visual warmth to balance the cooler exterior temperatures.

One of the great ways you can consider incorporating these tones into your home is by painting your woodwork with these deep tones. They’ll create a great contract against any cool setting and they’ll add a pop of colour where you need it most.

Recommended Shades:

Bedec Multi Surface Paint (MSP) Satin - No primer or undercoat needed, so you can just get on with adding some colour, but for infusing warmth, we’d recommend Plum, Inca and Claret for skirting boards, door frames and dado rails.

If you’re looking to gloss your woodwork, we’d recommend giving Craig & Rose 1829 Vintage Collection Gloss a try.

There are 110 colours to choose from, but for this purpose, we’d suggest: Jarosite, Russet and Cadmium.

Ultimately, selecting the appropriate interior paint tones for your west-facing home is essential for creating a comfortable living environment year-round.

By embracing cool colours like light blues and greens to combat summer heat, and incorporating warm earthy tones or deep accent colours to enhance winter warmth, you can achieve a balanced, cosy and beautifully stylish atmosphere all year round!

With these tips in mind, you can create an inviting home that keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter, ensuring your comfort throughout the changing seasons.
